    WORKSHOP TOPICS

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE CLASSES:

Classes will draw concepts and material from a variety of dance styles (ie, blues, tango, ballroom, fusion...) and will focus almost entirely on techniques that can make your dance connection and partnership that much more of a rich and profound experience in any dance you do (as apposed learning lots of moves and steps-based patterns for a specific style)

What makes this retreat such a unique experience is not only the knowledge of your instructors, but the material they will be teaching and the way they will be presenting it.  During the course of the camp, you will be taken on a personal journey, utilizing a variety of social dance styles, to emphasize those critical elements of energy & connection that are so fundamental to improving your ability to communicate (or "converse") on the dance floor...in ANY style of dance!

If you have taken mostly "steps-based" classes or workshops in the past, this might be one of the most important experiences you will have in order to
get you to that next level of enjoying your dancing, of fluidly improvising with alternate rhythms, of connecting profoundly to the music, and of truly appreciating and celebrating your partnerships, both on the dance floor and off.

This is the vital, rich stuff that all beginning dancers, and even most intermediate or advanced dancers have not really been exposed to, but are usually very eager to learn once they become aware of these elements.  And this is what this weekend is about.  It's a very unique, very special opportunity to take your dance to the next level with two masterful teachers, and it really doesn't matter whether you come to this from a beginning, intermediate, or advanced level of dance.  This weekend will blow your mind, and will truly change the way you think about and appreciate partner dancing for long time to come!

    FEATURED INSTRUCTORS:

ARI LEVITT, MD:  "Partnering, Connection, Conversation, & Musicality"  In Ari's classes, we will be using blues, swing, fusion, and a few other dance styles to focus on many of the much broader and deeper concepts of partner connection, fun, and play that can be applied to just about any dance genre you do.  If you've ever taken a workshop before with Ari in one of these topics, you know that you are nigh guaranteed a rich, transformative experience, with a plethora of wonderful concepts and ideas to take home with you that will give you much to think about for both your dancing on the floor, and, in the case of our "wellness" theme for this retreat, the applications of those lessons to life off the floor...

RICHARD POWERS:  "Collaborative Dance Partnering with Tango and Blues"  This series of classes will quickly take partnered dancing from the basics (including if you have never danced), to new possibilities that Richard's Stanford students are currently finding very exciting (including his most advanced students).  No dance experience is required, just a fun-loving attitude and lots of enthusiasm, but the more partnered dancing that you happen to know, the more you'll get out of the class.

     ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTORS & WELLNESS COACHES:

We are very privileged to have with us several talented wellness coaches who will be leading us in some wonderful extra-dance-curricular group activities, as well as providing opportunities for private coaching or instruction.  Check the calendar for group activity times and locations.  For private coaching, please see each teacher for prices and availability at the retreat.

Jan Klimek, Yoga Instructor & Therapist:

    • Jan is an experienced, long-time yoga instructor, holding certificates and specializing in a number of different sports and non-sports specific yoga modalities, including "yoga for golfers", and "yoga for cancer survivors".  She is proud to have been practicing, studying and teaching yoga for many years to a wide range of individual, across all demographics and ability levels.  She currently works as a yoga instructor at the Fairmont Hot Springs in B.C., Canada, and is very much looking forward to meeting all of you both on the dance floor and on the yoga matts!

     Tracey Powers, Outdoor Running/Walking/Fitness:

    • An avid marathon runner and cross-trainer, Tracey will be leading morning runs and/or "walk & talks" (depending on the ambition of the group) on Mon & Tues.  A perfect way to get the adrenalin going, then have a little soak in the hot tubs before classes begin!

    RICHARD POWERS

Richard has been teaching contemporary and historic social dance for over 35 years.  He leads workshops around the world and is currently a full-time instructor at Stanford University's Dance Division.  You can read more about Richard on his web page at http://richardpowers.com/

While Richard is best know to most today for his work in historic dance and for his resurrection of the cross-step waltz, his overarching trajectory since 1970 has really been on the enhancement of creativity in interdisciplinary environments.

To this end, in addition to his pursuit of creativity in dance, Richard is also a graphic designer & design engineer, and the recipient of 8 U.S. and international patents as well as 25 Art Directors Show awards for graphic design. In the world of dance, Richard has choreographed for dozens of stage productions and films, and has taught workshops across the U.S. and abroad. When he lived in Cincinnati, he was founder and Director of Co-Works, Inc., a large and long-lived artists' intermedia collaborative, and was recipient of the Post-Corbett Award for Performing Artist, Cincinnati's foremost arts recognition.

More recently, Richard was selected by the Centennial Issue of Stanford Magazine as one of Stanford University's most notable graduates of its first century.

At the retreat, in addition to teaching classes, Richard will offer cozy storytelling sessions by the fireplace, drawing from the chapters on holistic wellness from his new book, Waltzing: A Manual for Dancing and Living.  Topics will include the essential benefits of music, physical activity, connection, play, mindfulness, acceptance and conditional learning.

The perfect setting for fun interactive learning, dining, dancing, and R&R!
